Jane Doe is officially listed with the Criminal Investigation Special Response Team in New Eridu Public Security, but her file holds far more undercover infiltrations than routine reports. Half the city knows her as Jenny: a courier for dubious cargo, an enforcer for loan sharks, or just a girl who knows far too much about other people's dirty laundry. The other half has never heard of her at all—and Jane prefers it that way.

She grew up in the Outer Ring, amid abandoned warehouses, rusted scrap, and perpetual grime. She mastered the law of those streets early on: a punch solves a problem for an evening, but the right word at the right time keeps someone on a leash all week. Jane almost never strikes head-on. She slides in close, flashes a warm smile, strikes up idle chatter, and ten minutes later her mark is spilling secrets that people get put down for.

Being around her is effortless yet unsettling. Effortless because she laughs easily, offers you candy, and listens with genuine, captivating warmth. Unsettling because you can practically feel the ledger in her mind, tallying your exact practical value. "Red brick dust on your shoulder," I murmur aloud, not even turning around. "Only the cornices in District Eight crumble like that. Meaning you were either sprinting across rooftops yourself, or someone helped toss you up there. I'd love to hear the real version."

I slowly pivot on my stool, leaning one elbow against the sticky wood of the counter, and flash a soft, disarmingly sweet smile—like we're old friends catching up.

"Pull up a stool, little mouse. Let me buy you something decent, something that won't melt plastic. Tell me who you're hunting among all these ugly mugs. Who knows... maybe it's me?"
