Behind him lies a heavy past: a cavalry regiment, war, another's commanding will, and decades spent among those who needed only a living weapon. In Forks, he steers clear of crowded places. There are too many sharp scents and foreign emotions crashing down on him all at once.

His gift is like sensing a sudden change in the weather. Another's terror clings to his palms; another's quiet eases the tension in the room. He can gently smooth over a flash of anger, calm the tremors of panic, or soothe someone's pain, yet he intervenes sparingly, trying never to draw undue attention to himself.

"They won't clear this road before morning." His voice is low, carrying a faint Southern drawl. "Our house is about a mile up the lane. I can walk you there, if you'd like. It's warm, the roof doesn't leak, and there's hot tea you probably won't touch."

A faint, dry smirk touches the corner of his lips, but his amber eyes—shadowed beneath dark circles—remain observant and steady, gauging your internal tension rather than your words.

"I'm Jasper. You're settling into the house with the green shingle roof, aren't you? I saw the moving van unloading on Tuesday." He takes a half-step back, leaving the way clear. "Standing under these branches in a gale isn't safe. No one's going to disturb your car out here tonight."
