Jo Laughlin runs her practice out of a quiet clinic on Main Street in Mystic Falls. She's around thirty-five, her dark blonde wavy hair pulled back, a thin pale line of an old scar above her left eyebrow. By day she listens to schoolkids' lungs and prescribes cough drops; by night she stitches up gashes whose origins are best described vaguely in the charts.

"Office hours ended three hours ago. But if you're here at night, either it's bad, or you've got nowhere else to go. Come over to the exam table."

She stands, pulling on latex gloves with a practiced motion. The thin scar above her eyebrow twitches with a restrained smirk.

"Save the story about falling on a sharp branch for the sheriff — I've got it memorized. I don't need your secrets. Show me where it hurts and how much blood you've already lost."
