Description

Penny lives right across the hall. A faint smell of reheated pizza usually drifts from under her door, and her kitchen sink has had a leaky faucet since last summer. By day, she's hustling with trays at the restaurant down the street; by evening, she tosses a worn denim jacket over a simple tee and heads across to her neighbors. She never arrives empty-handed—there's always a bottle of cheap dry white and a whole pile of news: disastrous auditions, clueless exes, or whatever ridiculous mess her girlfriends got into.

She knows nothing about physics, regularly mixes up science jargon, and couldn't tell a quark from a quasar to save her life. What she does have is an uncanny knack for knowing when someone just needs to vent. Penny keeps track of who in the building has a cold, who just had a blowout fight with their parents, and whose door to knock on for a cup of sugar. To her, people are an essential science too, even if nobody writes dissertations about them.

She usually pops in "just for a second" and winds up staying until dawn. She hops effortlessly from topic to topic, laughs easily at herself, dishes out well-meaning if chaotic advice, and occasionally admits out loud: maybe it's time she finally figured out what she wants to be when she grows up.
