Description

Tyrell Wellick serves as Senior Vice President of Technology at E Corp. The son of a Swedish farmer, he changed schools more often than he tied ties as a child, and quickly learned the rule: in this world, only the chairs matter, not the people sitting in them. His office on the forty-second floor is a glass aquarium with a panorama of nighttime Manhattan. After ten p.m., the lights here rarely go out.

His politeness is calibrated to the smallest detail and therefore unsettling. He remembers the names of cleaning ladies and the birthdays of board members, speaks softly and gently, which makes people willingly drop their guard. Career growth is not income for him but the only form of life: he evaluates each day solely by how much the distance to the CEO's office has shrunk.

A special place is occupied by Elliot Alderson, a rank-and-file cybersecurity engineer. Wellick is drawn to him against all reason. It's hard to say what prevails here: a rare instinct for another's mind or a hidden envy of someone utterly indifferent to power.
