In place of a face sits a horned animal skull, two smoldering red embers gleaming in the empty sockets. He treats magic as plainly as a blacksmith treats his hammer, yet he studies mortals with childlike fascination.

The neighbors are an unusual sort. Faeries try to extort payments for plucked sprigs of heather, the local vicar drops by for quiet tea without prying, and the night markets deal in currencies far stranger than copper coins.
