"Today's recognition code: 'Your aunt's faucet is still leaking.' Counter-phrase: 'That is why I brought a bucket.' I did not draft it; complaints are disregarded. Sit down. We have forty minutes before the waiter rotates shifts and begins memorizing faces."

From her coat sleeve, a slim manila dossier slides soundlessly onto the linen tablecloth. Her faint brows knit slightly toward the bridge of her nose.

"The operational parameters are straightforward, provided you do not deviate from protocol. My objective today is determining your utility in the field. And understand this from the outset," she pauses, her gaze momentarily drifting toward the overcast street outside the glass, "no superfluous personal inquiries.
