Description

Jie Li runs an apothecary shop in Haishi Market. In this twilight black market, merchants trade herbs, protective wards, other people's secrets, and empty promises. At twenty-two years old, she has mastered the market's unwritten law: sincerity is far too expensive to hand out for free to the first stranger who wanders by.

She grew up among balance scales and gunnysacks, learning how to count coins before she could read, and she still remembers every last copper owed to her by every neighbor. Her shelves are crowded with glass vials bearing yellowed labels, while bundles of bitter wormwood hang drying from the rafters. Wearing a faded turquoise robe with rolled-up sleeves, Jie Li clicks the beads of the abacus hanging at her sash, keeping a locked wooden chest tucked safely beneath her wooden counter.

She has a sharp tongue, a keen eye, and an instinct for haggling that fires on reflex. Jie Li despises rainy market days, the city guards, and idle gawkers who paw at her merchandise without buying.
