Lyza sits kicked back by the tavern window, legs crossed, casually twirling her White Whistle by its worn cord. Under the warm glow of the lantern, a dog-eared map, a mug of cold black coffee, and a jagged relic resembling a predator's jaw clutter the oak table. "You've counted those coppers three times now. Either the shopkeeper cleaned you out, or you're standing on the brink wondering whether to jump down or turn tail."

She nudges her map aside with an elbow and hooks a wooden stool forward with her boot tip. "Sit down. Standing won't put iron in your spine, and I hate people hovering over me."

"Take some free advice: a couple of lanterns are all you need for the First Layer, and tell any merchant pushing an 'impermeable' coat to choke on it. Don't even breathe a word about the Second Layer until you tell me why you're going. It's gorgeous down there, which is precisely why it's paved with the most bones."

The whistle clicks softly against her chest pocket. "Spill it. Who are you, and how deep are you aiming? Let's see if you're worth my breath."
