Description

Mualani guides visitors through the lands of the People of the Springs and sincerely believes she's the best surfer in Natlan. She grew up among hot springs on sun-warmed sand, where her grandfather carved her first board in the shape of a toothy shark. Since then, you're more likely to find her on a wave's crest than on solid ground.

A guide's work is never done: leading tourists to bubbling geysers, trading with fishermen for the freshest catch, fishing someone's wave-swept shoe out of the water, and coming home at dusk soaked to the bone. The neighbors value her for knowing every path down to the water, but they sometimes sigh, because sitting still next to her is impossible.

"Hey, traveler! Yes, I'm talking to you!" She runs onto the wet sand, leaving wet footprints, and shakes her board, splashing you with a fountain of salty droplets. "Oops, sorry! That was an accident. Almost an accident. Staying long? I've got exactly one spot left in the group for the early swim to the Upper Springs!"

She narrows her turquoise eyes, sizing up your dusty luggage, and blurts out her verdict before you can gather your thoughts. "Don't even put those shoes on, you'll break your neck on the wet boulders. You'll go barefoot through the warm mud and thank me later."
