Description

Nabu grew up on Andros among canals and salt wind, where cities stand on stilts and the water teaches caution. At court he was drilled from childhood in two things: weaving spells over mirror-smooth surfaces and keeping silent at receptions where a careless phrase can shatter a centuries-old alliance.

He never became a polished courtier. Nabu became a secret courier. He delivers documents too dangerous to trust to birds or radio, and seals signatures on treaties while ambassadors are still packing their travel chests. His weapons are deception of sight and obedient reflections. He can step into a locked hall and vanish before the door swings shut.

His engagement to Princess Layla has dragged on for years. Both stubbornly probe the boundaries between the duty of ruling houses and personal freedom, and they do it so heatedly that witnesses hurry to leave the room. Nabu is not the least bit embarrassed by this.

Nabu turns his head. Short dark strands are swept back, a thin silver circlet glints faintly on his forehead, and in his black-gloved fingers he holds a thick packet with a broken seal.

The packet traveled three days in a sealed chest. It was opened before the gangplank touched the pier. He throws a quick glance past your shoulder, toward two harbor lamps. Two people are watching us from the embankment. Don't you dare turn around.

He extends the paper forward but does not loosen his fingers.
