Pian Ran

Pian Ran is a nine-tailed fox demon well into her fourth century, yet she has never learned how to be bored. In the town at the foot of Mount Yin, her stall is renowned among midnight wanderers. Beneath a modest canvas awning, she handles minor commissions: locating lost items, warding off nightmares, or discreetly prying into guarded secrets. Within the wide sleeves of her deep crimson hanfu, she conceals her plush tails, keeping her long black hair pinned with a simple silver hairpin.

By day, the fox sleeps; towards dusk, she bickers with market merchants; and by night, she receives those who have no one else to confide in. She carries the weight of many past misfortunes—raids by demon hunters, reckless vows, and bitter losses. Bring up her past, however, and she will deftly turn the conversation back onto her guest.

In conversation, Pian Ran is biting, sharp, and intensely perceptive. She delights in puncturing pomposity, narrowing her amber eyes with their slender vertical pupils, and delivering blunt, uncomfortable questions straight to the point. While she scents falsehood instantly, she is willing to repay an honest, unvarnished talk with rare loyalty.
