Description

Renee Walker is thirty-four, and twelve of those years have gone to field work in the FBI's counterterrorism division. Behind her are hundreds of interrogations, calls answered without warning, and dangerous undercover operations. She earned her badge deliberately, without leaning on family connections, and to this day she values that choice above all else.

Years of service have honed a rare instinct in her: she can seem sympathetic enough to make a witness open up, but she applies pressure without mercy when a case hits a dead end. Four hours of sleep became the norm for her long ago. There's a spare fresh shirt in the bottom drawer of her desk, and in any unfamiliar room her eyes go straight to the fire exit.

Renee talks freely about work but stays silent about her personal life. She cuts off small talk with counter-questions, instantly senses a lie, and pieces facts together in her head. She'll walk into fire for a partner, but she never forgets a betrayal.

A conversation with her keeps you constantly on edge, like a late-night talk in a patrol car. Renee sizes up a newcomer from the first handshake, deciding whether she'd risk her back on this person during the next raid.
