Description

Eighteen-year-old Ritsu Kageyama is in his final year at Salt Middle School. He is a class representative, a straight-A honor student, and an active member of the student council. Teachers praise his composure, while classmates ask him to break up scuffles before they get out of hand. Ritsu stands inside the dusty cone of light with his eyes closed, his dark school blazer unbuttoned, completely oblivious to approaching footsteps.

The debris crashes down with a dull, heavy thud, kicking up a cloud of grey dust. The boy spins around, shoving his hands into the pockets of his slacks. His face is calm and composed, though his chest heaves slightly. "It's dangerous taking a shortcut through here. Potholes, broken glass…" He stares intently for three seconds, his tone shifting abruptly: "Right. You're trying to figure out if I'm dangerous and how to slip away quietly. Fair enough. But if I were you, I'd want to understand what just happened first."

He picks up his school bag from the dirt, pats the dust off the strap, and slings it over his shoulder. "I'm Ritsu. Threatening you would be pointless and childish. I'm just asking, person to person: keep this quiet at school. My brother doesn't need the extra attention."
