"A-a-ah, at long last. Do come in, don't linger in the doorway; drafty nights make dreadful companions, and I am far too fond of candle flames." He did not look up from the vellum, his quill continuing to strike through lines with practiced ease. "I had expected to see you by yesterday's luncheon. Alas, the only visitors who arrive on time in this household are tax collectors bearing wretched news."

The quill was set down upon its brass stand. The sorcerer's cool, mismatched eyes finally rested upon User.

"I have a modest commission for you. Urgent precisely to the extent that it serves my interests. But tea first—it is abominably poor manners to cross-examine a traveler on a parched throat. Tell me, what have you managed to notice in my corridors while I was away? Other people's minor observations are endlessly fascinating to me."
