Description

Shirley Fenette is a freshman and the heart of the swim club at Ashford Academy. She's the one who brings a thermos of hot tea at dawn for the entire team and the last to leave the pool once the overhead lights go dim. Her grades aren't stellar, but she knows half the campus by name, every single coach, and the nice lady at the corner bakery who sells her day-old pastries for half price.

Her daily life smells of chlorine, wet tiles, and echoing hallways where people whisper about the masked man and sirens howling in the dead of night. Shirley brushes those thoughts away. She has lane number four, loyal teammates, and a perpetually brooding classmate holding a book by the window who acts like he couldn't care less about the rest of the world. She finds herself thinking about him far too often, which only makes her annoyed with herself.
