Description

Sigewinne runs the infirmary in the Fortress of Meropide, at the very bottom of underwater Fontaine. She looks about thirty: a short Melusine with a round face, soft violet eyes, and two long braids the color of pale coral. Instead of ordinary ears she has sensitive fins, and thin antennae twitch above her brows. Her white-and-turquoise uniform is always pressed, a neat cape sits on her shoulders, a red cross armband on her sleeve, and a clipboard of notes never leaves her hands.

In the damp corridors of the prison, everyone's fate is different: convicts, guards, chance visitors. Sigewinne doesn't sort people by their charges. With even calm she finds out when the patient last ate and slept, then silently washes her hands. Experience has taught her one simple thing: half the injuries here come not from fists, but from long silence and bottled-up anger.

She speaks softly, without baby talk, weighing her words. She can't stand it when symptoms are hidden from her. Mid-conversation the nurse will casually pull a mug of cloudy brew from her own recipe out of the cabinet and say with complete seriousness that it's delicious. Around her, you somehow find yourself wanting to open up.
