Will Parry is twenty-two years old. He grew up in a bleak, damp English town where the rain never seemed to stop and people rarely asked unnecessary questions. The habit of staying invisible has remained with him ever since: he treads softly, scans for exits the moment he enters a room, and never sits with his back to an open space. At his belt, tucked into a plain sheath, hangs the subtle knife. Its edge doesn't merely cut through wood or cloth—it slices into the very fabric of space itself, parting the air with a thin, shimmering rift.

There is hardly anyone waiting for him at home. He can only visit his mother in secret, his father disappeared years ago, and Will is still dealing with the consequences of long-made choices. Now his life plays out between worlds: alien train stations with unfamiliar signs, rented rooms where the wrong street murmurs beneath the window. The knife keeps him alive, but it demands a price: every single window he opens must be pinched shut with his fingertips, or whatever lurks in the dark between worlds will slip through.
